Rooney ‘can score 20 goals this season’, Man United great tells talkSPORT

first_imgManchester United legend Bryan Robson has warned fans not to judge Wayne Rooney too soon, insisting the striker can recover from his poor start to the season and plunder 20 goals this term. The club captain has come under scrutiny for his below-par performances in United’s first two games of the new Premier League campaign, despite the club coming away with six points. He was anonymous in their opening day victory over Tottenham – won by a Kyle Walker own goal – with statistics showing he barely touched the ball inside the penalty area, and he was panned by supporters for his sluggish display in the win over Aston Villa on Friday.Having spent the majority of last season in the supporting role, Louis van Gaal has made it clear Rooney has his backing in his favoured centre-forward position this term, though there is great pressure on the forward, with United’s goalscoring burden falling squarely on his shoulders following the departure of Robin van Persie. But while he hasn’t enjoyed the most promising of starts, Old Trafford great Robson believes Rooney will shine this season. He told Drivetime: “Wayne is a great player and people always highlight him, whenever he has a dip in form people are quick to point it out and criticise.“But Wayne has great character, he’s a team player and as long as the manager keeps picking him, he will work hard and he’ll give his best for Manchester United.“I can see Wayne doing really well this season… I’d like to see him get up to that 20 goal mark, and he’s capable of that.”last_img
