China blasts Pompeo over accusation of genocide in Xinjiang

first_imgBEIJING (AP) — A Chinese government official has accused former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of trying to cripple Beijing’s relations with new President Joe Biden’s administration by declaring China’s actions against the Uighur ethnic group “genocide.” It’s the latest in a Chinese attempt to counter efforts in Western countries to cut trade ties and sanction Chinese officials over widespread reported abuses in the region, including mass detention, forced labor and forced birth control. The comments come as Biden’s administration is formulating its policies toward China, which many analysts call the biggest geopolitical challenge facing the U.S.last_img read more

Obama’s victory like Mandela’s: Tutu

first_img6 November 2008 The former president applauded Obama’s commitment to supporting peace and security around the world, and asked him to help in ridding the world of poverty and disease. Comparing Obama’s victory to that of South Africa when Nelson Mandela became the country’s first black president in 1994, Tutu said it showed “that change is possible in the world”. The 47-year-old president-elect, who will be sworn in as America’s 44th president in January 2009, said “change is coming to America”. “We wish you strength and fortitude in the challenging days and years that lie ahead,” Mandela wrote. “We are sure you will ultimately achieve your dream of making the United States of America a full partner in a community of nations committed to peace and prosperity for all.” Meanwhile, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki declared Thursday a public holiday “for Kenyans to celebrate the historic achievement by Senator Obama and our country.” Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was among other South Africans who congratulated Obama on Wednesday. Source: BuaNews Busa said it hoped Obama would fulfil the promises of subsidies made by the US to developing countries during World Trade Organisation talks. ‘Change is coming to America Kibaki called Obama’s victory a “momentous” day for Kenya, where Obama’s father was born. “The victory of Senator Obama is our own victory because of his roots here in Kenya,” Kibaki said. “As a country, we are full of pride for his success.”center_img Business Unity South Africa (Busa) said Obama would bring a new and fresh approach to the economy that would change America’s relationships with the rest of the world. Obama won the key states of Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania, securing him his seat in the White House. He said this was seen “by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen, of people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different.” Earlier on Wednesday, South African President Kgalema Motlanthe urged Obama to use his presidency to tackle poverty. Obama won a convincing victory on Wednesday, saying his election was proof that his country was capable of change. Delivering his acceptance speech, Obama told a rally of over 200 000 people that their response to his call to vote was outstanding. “We express the hope that poverty and under-development in Africa, which remains a challenge for humanity, will indeed continue to receive a greater attention of the focus of the new administration,” Motlanthe said. As the world celebrates Barack Obama’s win in the United States presidential elections, former South African president Nelson Mandela has written a letter congratulating Obama on his victory. Hopes for trade subsidies In a letter sent out by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Mandela said the achievement of Obama, the son of an African immigrant and the first black president of the world’s most powerful country, demonstrated that every person had the potential to bring about change for a better world.last_img read more

Ohio Ag Weather and Forecast, July 19, 2019

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest More hot air today, with humidity that makes it feel worse.  Parts of Ohio, particularly NW and northern areas, caught a huge break with several clusters of thunderstorms moving through, keeping sun at bay and allowing for the hottest part of the day to pass with no major jump in temps. Those areas will not be so lucky today, joining the the state in yesterday’s warm up. Highs today and tomorrow will range from 90-97 and overnight lows this morning and tomorrow morning will be only from 75-80. The next 48 hours are going to be ugly. Showers and thunderstorms work through the state on Sunday with a cold front. The rain totals will be mostly from .25”-.75” with 75% coverage. There is a chance for heavier thunderstorms that would boost rain totals to near an inch or more, but we think those will be highly localized. The action sags through the state from NW to SE, with the best rains Saturday afternoon and evening through the overnight. Monday still features some leftover showers in the southern third of the state to start the day, but all areas turn out partly to mostly sunny before the day is through. The NW areas just see it sooner, as the clearing sweeps through in the same manner as Sunday’s front. Mostly sunny, dry weather will be in for the balance of the week, Tuesday through Sunday. WE see temps in the upper 70s Monday and Tuesday, then slowly climbing through the 80s Wednesday through Friday, and we get into the 90s again for next weekend. The map at right shows 10 day rain totals. The extended period continues the dry weather for Monday the 29th as heat remains in the area. That can trigger a few scattered thunderstorms, but only 40% coverage. For Tuesday the 30th we end up partly sunny, hot and humid, but cant rule out afternoon thunderstorms. Wednesday is our other organized front crossing the state, bringing rain totals of .25”-.75” with 80% coverage. The remainder of the extended period turns out partly to mostly sunny for Thursday and Friday, the 2nd and 3rd. So, overall, we have on decent threat of rain in the next 10 days, and only 2 well organized threats in the coming 16 days. That is below normal for this time of year. Put that together with the hot air the next 2 days, and a return to well above normal air again a week from now, and it is not the best recipe for crop growth, development, and/or pollination.last_img read more

Joe Randle Will Stand Trial For Apparently Threatening To Kill Someone

first_imgIf you’re looking for the comments section, it has moved to our forum, The Chamber. You can go there to comment and holler about these articles, specifically in these threads. You can register for a free account right here and will need one to comment. If you’re wondering why we decided to do this, we wrote about that here. Thank you and cheers! NFL season is almost here. Let’s check in on Joe Randle. Here’s the Wichita Eagle. Give me something good, Wichita Eagle.Ex-Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle will stand trial for allegedly threatening to kill a jail deputy after he was denied a phone call in May, a Sedgwick County judge ruled Friday morning. “On its face it’s real clear what he said. He used the word ‘kill,’ ” District Judge Joe Kisner said, explaining his decision to bind Randle, 24, over for trial on one count of criminal threat, which is a felony.Welp.Randle also pleaded not guilty to eight other felony charges in addition to the one about killing the jail deputy. Here is Randle’s defense for the threat of murder according to the Eagle. Randle’s defense attorney, Steven Mank, on Thursday argued that if a person has “no way to commit the violence, it’s a hollow threat.” He had asked Kisner to throw out the case.Kind of has a point there. My two-year-old can say he’s going to end my life all he wants, but as long as we hide the knives, what’s he really going to do about it? Right? On the other hand, the inability to take someone’s life because you’re in solitary confinement in a jail is probably not the greatest defense of all time! The hearing was only about 9 min long. Randle, his attorney talked briefly before he was escorted out by deputies. pic.twitter.com/nIsJf7Uxi9— Amy Renee Leiker (@AmyReneeLeiker) August 19, 2016I don’t follow the post-college careers of players from other schools as closely as I do those from Oklahoma State (obviously), but the stretch of Joe Randle, Justin Blackmon, Perrish Cox, Brandon Sheperd (!!!) and to a lesser extent guys like Justin Gilbert has not been a great one for OSU (or Mike Gundy).Hopefully this one has a happier ending than some of the others, but we are not trending towards a good place right now.last_img read more

Senate Approves New Road Traffic Act

first_imgThe Senate has approved the amended Road Traffic Act, which has new offences, larger fines and harsher penalties for motor vehicle operators who breach the law.Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, who piloted the Bill through the Senate on December 7, said too many lives are being lost on the roads, due to “bad driving practices,” and a signal is being sent that offenders will no longer get away with “light fines.”“We have to take hold of this culture of indiscipline and bad drivers must be called to answer for their wrongs. If we do not fix the system that allows them to hide from the law and have fines that are light, then they will operate with impunity,” the Senator told the Upper House. She added that the new legislation is not targeting taxi operators or any particular sector, or even to generate revenue.“It is to ensure that all road users can be safe, where persons in charge of vehicles operate in a responsible manner. The amendments are about law and order, and about the safety of people,” she emphasised. Some of the offences for which heavy fines will be imposed include driving without the required motor vehicle insurance coverage ($20,000); driving a motor vehicle without being the holder of a permit or driver’s licence ($40,000); failure of a driver to obey the traffic light ($24,000); loud noise within silent zones and failure to wear a protective helmet ($5,000); failure to comply with traffic signs ($10,000); and failure to stop at a pedestrian crossing ($12,000).The Bill was passed in the House of Representatives on November 13, with six amendments.Senator Johnson Smith urged drivers who pay scant regard to the law to “get ready for a new day,” as no longer will they be able to ignore tickets issued by the police. She reiterated that when drivers and motor vehicle owners seek to relicense their vehicles and do other business, if they have unsettled tickets, they will not be able to do so.“We feel confident that the new approach has been rigorous, and it is going to take us to the right place, where discipline and law and order will reign on our streets,” she said.    Senator Johnson Smith pointed out that the Ministry of Transport and Mining held several meetings with transport associations to explain aspects of the new law, and to hear their concerns. She noted that these will be considered for the accompanying regulations that will come into effect within three to four months.last_img read more

Magic Johnson Addresses The Nations High School Dropout Rate

first_imgIn an effort to increase the number of former dropouts receiving their high school diploma, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, two-time NBA Hall-of-Famer and business titan, is making new friendships to take action in addressing the high school dropout epidemic. This new organization, called Friends of Magic, will be a network of individuals, foundations and companies whose mission is to provide Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academy students who are at risk or have dropped out the resources and assistance they need to not only graduate high school, but the opportunity to build their future through educational resources, internships and real world experiences.“As many as one quarter of our nation’s students are not finishing high school,” said Earvin “Magic” Johnson. “Our goal is to ensure that no student falls through the cracks, and that all students have the opportunity to receive their high school diplomas and be fully prepared for college or the workplace.”According to Natalie Williams, Vice-President of Strategic Alliances, the intent behind the Friends of Magic organization is to be a thought leader in dropout recovery and prevention solutions by providing valuable educational resources in urban areas. The resources received will be directed to provide scholarships, internships and program enhancements for students who attend the Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academies across the country.Williams also stated that in addition to securing resources, the Friends of Magic organization plans to recruit legions of volunteers to drive the dropout recovery and prevention mission at a grassroots level.“Our goal is to see more young people reach their fullest potential,” said Williams. “Friends of Magic will put the resources where they are needed the most. This includes providing scholarships, mentoring programs, and internships that propel each and every high school graduate toward their goals.”To officially launch the Friends of Magic movement nationally, Magic Johnson is hosting a press conference in Chicago. The very first “friend” of the Friends of Magic organization is Chicago-native rapper/actor Common. The hip-hop star will participate in the press conference and lend his support to the movement.“I have always admired Magic’s commitment to bring business and services to our community. In Chicago, the violence is so bad that we all need to band together whenever possible to provide real alternatives and give young people a reason to hope and to dream for a brighter future for themselves,” Common said. “I think this opportunity is a step in that direction for so many students. I’m honored to be a part of the launch of Friends of Magic and to work with Magic, through Common Ground Foundation, to do what we can for our youth in Chicago.”last_img read more

He has improved a lot within the last couple of years. But he needs quality players around him to succeed, so it’s not only up to one player,” Stam told Sky Sports.“That’s the quality of a manager, in building a team and getting certain players working together.“Virgil is a great asset to Liverpool, he’s doing very well.
