Northern Foods sees steady progress in bakery

first_imgNorthern Foods has achieved “further progress” in bakery according to its interim management statement for the first quarter.Underlying revenue in its Bakery division rose by 6.8% for the 13 weeks to 27 June 2009. The firm said brand investment in Fox’s Biscuits, with its ‘Vinnie’ TV campaign and activities on Facebook and Twitter, has led to increased purchases of the brand.Revenue in its Chilled division increased by 9.2%, with the recent warm weather resulting in increased demand for sandwiches and salads. The company’s Frozen division saw a drop in underlying revenue of 1.5% compared to the comparable period last year. The firm noted the closure of its original pizza manufacturing site at Poldys in Ireland last year as the reason behind the loss. However, it said frozen pies continued to perform well.Overall group underlying revenue was up 5.5% on Q1 last year.“Our focus upon high-quality products, to serve a range of tastes and budgets, positions us well to continue our progress. We have much more to do and have a range of initiatives to drive the business forward,” commented Stefan Barden, chief executive of Northern Foods.last_img read more

RU-486 Now Safe? Feminist researcher still doesn’t think so

first_imgNational Right to Life 21 November 2013It caused a bit of a stir in 1991 when three “pro-choice” feminists came out with a book warning of the dangers of the chemical abortifacient RU-486. “RU486: Misconception, Myths and Morals,” written by Renate Klein, a biologist and social scientist from Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia, Janice Raymond, a professor of women’s studies from the University of Amherst (Massachusetts), and Lynette Dumble, a member of the University of Melbourne’s Department of Surgery, won awards and received some momentary coverage in the press. But ultimately, the pro-abortion establishment pushed back and plowed ahead, ignoring the warnings.Approved in the U.S., the chemical abortion method is now legally on the market in at least 50 countries. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which approved RU-486 in September of 2000, says that 1.5 million women had used the drug as of April 2011.…Over the past several years, there have been modifications of dosages, the addition of antibiotics to some regimens, new warnings have been added to the label. Does any of this satisfy Renate Klein, one of the original feminist critics?Hardly. Writing in a ninety-page preface to a new edition of RU486: Misconceptions, Myths and Morals published earlier this year, far from taking anything back, after seeing twenty plus years of RU-486 on the market, Klein is as convinced as ever that “a down-to-earth rational best practice approach that truly respects women’s health and well being could not, in good faith, endorse this fraught abortion method.” Klein repeats here what she has published elsewhere–that she sees a ”RU 486/PG abortion as an unsafe, second-rate abortion method with significant problems”http://www.nationalrighttolifenews.org/news/2013/11/ru-486-now-safe-feminist-researcher-who-opposed-abortion-pill-in-1991-book-still-doesnt-think-so-part-one-of-two/#.UpamZ9T2-Ulhttp://www.nationalrighttolifenews.org/news/2013/11/ru-486-now-safefeminist-researcher-who-opposed-abortion-pill-in-1991-book-still-doesnt-think-so-part-two-of-two/#.UpanWNT2-Umlast_img read more

Pretenders or contenders? Next three games huge for Steelers

first_imgThe loss to the Tennessee Titans dropped the Steelers below 500, making the next three games critical if they are to have any chance of making the playoffs or even finishing with a winning record. Their next three opponents are the Cincinnati Bengals, 3-3; Washington Redskins, 3-3 and New York Giants, 4-2. All three teams have outstanding offenses but questionable defenses. The reason their offenses are clicking is they have outstanding quarterbacks. Steelers’ fans will get to see two of the best young quarterbacks in the league in Andy Dalton with the Bengals and Robert Griffin III with the Redskins, and then one of the top 5 quarterbacks in the game in Eli Manning with the Giants. The Bengals made the playoffs last season with a 9-7 record and appeared to be on their way this season before losing to a winless Cleveland Browns team last weekend.Dalton was 31 of 46 for 381 yards and three touchdowns, with his main targets being last years’ rookie sensation A.J. Green, 7 catches for 135 yards, and Cedric Peerman, 8 for 76 yards. But even though Ben Jarvis Green-Ellis is having a solid season rushing, they miss Cedric Benson who left for more money. They come into the game with their defense ranked 22th in points allowed compared to their offense which ranks 10th. The Steelers rank 16th in offense and 18th on defense in points allowed, which means they are going to have to score touchdowns if they are to defeat this young Bengals team.Even though the Steelers are sixth in passing yardage they are 20th in rushing yardage which spells out the fact that they need Rashard Mendenhall extremely bad. Mendenhall at 80 percent is better than any of the other backs they have on the team. Plus he makes others better because of the attention he draws. The Redskins are led by rookie sensation Robert Griffin III who is one of the most exciting players to enter the league in a long time. RGIII can throw the ball as his 101 quarterback rating illustrates, and he can run as his 132 yards rushing in last weeks’ game attest to. They rank seventh in the league in points scored which will once again put pressure on the Steelers defense to stop them and the offense to outscore them. However, their defense is one of the worst in the league, ranked at 27 in points allowed. They have simply been outscoring their opponents, while their young defense is developing. Then the Steelers face the defending NFL champs who have been playing just well enough to win. Behind Manning, who has an abundance of talent around him, they are fourth in the league in points scored, and are looking better as the season progresses. The defense was a problem early but has begun to jell as they illustrated against the San Francisco 49ers, 26-3 last week, as they dominated a team many are picking to win the Super Bowl.Good news for the Steelers came from Baltimore, as several of their top defensive players were injured and may be out the rest of the season or part of it but the bad news is that the offense has matured into one of the best in the league. So far they have been able to overcome the defensive weakness, but it remains to be seen if they can do it for the rest of the season, especially if Ray Lewis is out.Because the Ravens have built such a big lead, they will have to fall apart for the Steelers to have any chance of catching them for the AFC North title. However, with the New England Patriots and most of the other teams in the AFC struggling, the Steelers still have a chance as a Wild Card, but they need to get back on track. And that means winning their next three games, which is a big, big, challenge. They will have to do it against the Bengals and Giants on the road. This will decide if they are contenders are pretenders. Production Tips: Working With a Color Checker on Your Next Shoot

first_imgColor grading your videos? Consider using a color checker or color chart to get that perfect color grade every filmmaker is after.Achieving that perfect color grade — and color correction — is something that filmmakers yearn for. There’s just something so refreshing about a perfectly colored video. Most of the time, we consider our color tools to be those that we use in our editors, or within Resolve. However, there’s one tool you can utilize on set that will make managing perfect color much easier. That tool is a color checker — or color chart.I have to admit that until not too long ago, I’d never used a color checker on anything. Obviously, I had seen them around, but I wasn’t sure how they’d work for me as a filmmaker. Frankly, when I got one, I had to pore over videos online to figure out just how this tool would make me a better cinematographer. After much effort, I’ve discovered just how powerful a color checker can be. Let’s take a look at how this little tool can help you get better video. Perfect ColorThere’s so much that goes into making sure you have perfect colors in your video — from proper CRI balance in your lighting to setting the best white balance temperature in your camera. All of these factors play a vital role in getting perfect color from your images. The role of the color checker, or color chart, is to help keep color constant and consistent throughout the entire process. Through lens changes, camera changes, lighting changes, etc., color charts keep everything running smoothly. Now, how in the world does it do this? Essentially, the color palettes in your color checkers are perfect swabs of cyan, green, magenta, yellow, red, and blue. Once captured within the frame of your camera, this image is then brought into your NLE. Once in your NLE, or color correction software, you can harness this to correct for the picture perfect color. Check out this video below for a more comprehensive tutorial on how to incorporate this in your next project. Perfect ExposureOne added benefit of grabbing a color checker is that (most often) it comes with a middle grey card. A middle grey card sits perfectly at 50 on your IRE scale. That means you can use this with two tools: zebras and false color. If you set your zebras to show at 50%, once your zebras appear on your grey card, you’ll know you have a properly exposed image. The same can be said of false color. Whichever color you have allocated to represent 50 IRE, once proper exposure is set, then that color will appear on the middle grey card, thus yielding a properly exposed image.  Overall, snagging a color checker for your next production is always a great choice. Is it the most fun thing you could buy right now for your filmmaking kit? Let’s be honest, probably not. However, it could be the perfect addition on your journey to better videos. Cover image via Gecko Studio.Looking for more filmmaking tips and tricks? FRANCIS CUTS LOCKS FOR WORLD’S GREATEST SHAVE CAUSE

first_imgFrancis Wood, one of the Touch Football community’s most talented young referees, has given her hair its marching orders as part of the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. For Wood, the 2007 World’s Greatest Shave was the culmination of a seven-year plan. The nineteen-year-old grew her long locks down to her buttocks before getting rid of them for charity. She had been growing her hair since first deciding to shave her head after her aunt Vicki was diagnosed with leukaemia in 1998. “I couldn’t do it while I was at school. I wanted to grow my hair past my bottom and do something weird and shave it off,” Francis said.  Aunt Vicki and mother Michelle are proud of the dedication that Francis has shown.Michelle, who has also shaved her head in the past, donated bone marrow to sister Vicki in 1999. “I think [shaving] it’s a great idea, I think it’s quite honourable,” Michelle said. Francis and Michelle both think more people should get involved with World’s Greatest Shave. So far Francis has raised about $1,500. She is aiming to reach $4,000 by the end of the year and is currently on track. Michelle fully supports what her daughter has done.“She took an overall look at it and knew that it was ok to do it. It wasn’t suffering, she didn’t go through any great loss, and it was only her hair. Cancer sufferers lose their hair and some don’t get it back,” Michelle said.  The Level Two referee, who has been involved in the sport as a player and a referee for over four years, has received great support from the Touch Football community.Francis’ refereeing abilities have recently been recognised with induction into the New South Wales Touch Association Talented Referees Youth Squad. However, it is her endeavour off the field that is sure to raise public awareness for what is an ongoing and very serious problem that affects many people. New South Wales Touch Association Administration Manager Kylie Hearne is full of praise for Francis’ initiative and commitment to the worthy cause.“We have all been touched by this insidious disease in one way or another. Last year as a Touch community we lost Mick Johnson, and earlier this year Matt Essey to cancer. It’s awesome that someone as young as Francis is taking the lead and realizing that it’s a disease that affects the old and the young and that we can all play a part in helping fight against it… Francis had the most beautiful long hair, so it’s great that she had no qualms in doing this, it’s incredibly selfless and we’re all pretty proud of her for doing it. It would be great if the Touch community got right behind her and helped raise as much money as possible,” Ms. Hearne said.World’s Greatest Shave has raised in excess of $55 million in the past eight years. The funds go to supporting patients and families living with leukaemia, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. It also assists in providing a range of services including education, transportation and counselling. Francis’ contribution will undoubtedly have a great benefit to many people. She said that getting involved with the World’s Greatest Shave was definitely worthwhile because there is no real downside. “I’m not missing the hair. It feels great actually. I love helping people. The money will go to helping kids that are sick. I haven’t missed out on anything, I lost some hair, but it’ll grow back.” Only a month after lopping her “do”, Francis is already planning to shave again. “I was actually thinking of doing it again at the end of the year because it’s actually growing quite fast. I just love it, it feels great.”Money can be contributed to Francis’ tally until the end of the year. If you would like to donate visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com – go to Sponsor, follow the links and enter Francis Wood. The up-and-coming whistleblower would like others to take a message from her actions. “Get out there; try new things and new experiences in life. This has been a great experience for me. It’s been fun, and it’s great to feel like you are helping people in some small way,” Francis said.last_img read more
