Wenger hails match-winner Welbeck as Arsenal take step close to FA Cup final

first_imgArsene Wenger was delighted as Danny Welbeck struck a second-half winner against former club Manchester United on Monday night to send Arsenal to the FA Cup semi-finals.The ex-Red Devil took advantage of a defensive blunder to seal a 2-1 triumph, and the Gunners’ first victory at Old Trafford in nine years.Arsenal took the lead midway through the first half when Nacho Monreal coolly slotted his David de Gea after neat wing play from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.The hosts were level moments later though Wayne Rooney’s superb diving header, which was delivered on a plate by Angel di Maria’s beautiful cross. But Welbeck – who left his boyhood club for north London last summer – fired the Gunners back in front when he snatched Antonio Valencia’s loose back-pass and took the ball round De Gea to tap into an open net.And boss Wenger admitted he expected Welbeck to be fired up for the game, given that he was facing his old employers.“We want all to do well when we play against our former club to show we are great players,” the Frenchman said.“It is not easy to deal with the mental aspect of it. He focused just on his game and played football the way he wanted to. He has showed mental strength.“He is intelligent. He is a great talent and has done extremely well for the national team as well.”Wenger was delighted to move one step closer to retaining the FA Cup, but cautioned against expecting an easy win in the next round, where they will face either Bradford or Reading at Wembley Stadium.“Last year we played a tricky game at Wembley in the semi-final and you expect that again,” said Wenger, whose team progressed to the final last year after a penalty shootout triumph over Wigan.”I feel we played a good game from the start and we deserved to win the game.”last_img read more
