Justice long time coming for Shane’s family

first_img#HearThis: New music and video from Limerick rapper Strange Boy Print Reacting to the conviction of John Dundon for the murder of Shane Geoghegan, Independent city councillor John Gilligan said: “they said that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time but how could you be in the wrong place at the wrong time if you are a hundred yards from your own house.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up “It simply goes to show the complete callousness of the people who sent other people out to kill”.“I’m absolutely delighted. I had spoken to the gardai at the time and they said that they weren’t going to just get the person who pulled the trigger, what they were looking for was the people who pointed the finger. These people were equally as guilty if not more so and today’s sentence will reflect that,” added the former mayor.“Justice has been done and is seen to be done – it was a long time coming for the family and a long time coming on behalf of the people of Limerick city”.The Independent Councillor who was mayor during some of the city’s most violent incidents insisted Shane Geoghegan must be remembered as a decent hardworking person who was loved by all who met him.“I don’t want to remember him in conjunction with the scumbags who murdered him,” the former Mayor said.Cllr Gilligan said John Dundon’s conviction for the murder of an innocent young man, reinforces how Limerick people “will no longer cow down under gun law for anybody.“For far too long the name of Limerick was besmirched by these people and it seemed to become synonymous with the whole question of crime and violence particularly gun law.”He said the crime situation in Limerick has altered dramatically in a short number of years.“When John Fitizgerald came to Limerick city the first thing he insisted before any regeneration took place was that we were short 100 gardai. We got 100 gardai, they took on the task with renewed vigour and I’m delighted to say it is now accepted that they have smashed all the major drug gangs in Limerick.“You will always have problems where you have illicit drugs but Limerick city has now become one of the safest cities in Europe and that’s due to the extra gardai. You can’t have policing on the cheap it simply doesn’t work…”Limerick’s most senior garda, Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan presented figures to a recent meeting of the joint policing committee revealing the huge crackdown on serious crime and highlighting how Limerick city has not witnessed a murder in more than 19 months.Stressing the importance of an adequately resourced police force Cllr Gilligan warned there are other criminals “equally as vicious waiting in the wings”.“Unless we actually have the police force who are there in numbers and who are sufficiently motivated there are other people waiting in the wings. One has gone away today but there are other people waiting to take their place who would be equally as vicious if we allowed them to do it, but we are not going to allow them to do it and quite determined of that.”Chairman of the Joint Policing Committee in Limerick, Councillor Michael Hourigan, said the murder of Shane Geogheghan created outrage in the city.“People were so shocked by what happened. Shane Geogheghan represented all that was good about Limerick,” he said. The Fine Gael Councillor paid tribute to the work of gardai in bringing closure to the case and said the bravery of the witnesses involved must also be acknowledged.“That will actually reassure the people of Limerick that people are not afraid to go into the court and stand up and be counted and we need that message to go out to the people involved in criminal activity that the ordinary citizens of Limerick city and ordinary people are prepared to say their piece in the court,” he said.Fianna Fail TD, Willie O’Dea said that he has long praised the gardai in Limerick and added that they are “probably the most successful force in the world” in tackling serious crime. He added that Limerick was now a much safer place. In echoing the praise and diligence of An Garda Siochana and Chief Superintendent Dave Sheahan for bringing the murderers to justice, Kieran Ryan, a founding member of the Shane Geoghegan Trust, said that even the guilty verdict is “scant consolation to the family and friends who lost Shane in a mindless act of violence”.Mayor of Limerick Cllr Kathleen Leddin said the verdict brought closure to a difficult and prolonged campaign for justice by the family and friends of Shane Geoghegan, “a much loved, honest and respected member of the local community”.“Shane represented all that is good about our local community by making a difference to the lives of others. His death was mourned not only here in Limerick, but across the country and further afield,” she said. After waiting 1,739 days since his murder, the Geoghegan family along with his mother Mary, brother Anthony, fiancée Jenna and the people of Limerick who were shocked and appalled at the callous killing have answers as to who shot Shane Geoghegan and who ordered the hit.He may have “deeply regretted” the death of the rugby player, but John Dundon is set to appeal the verdict as he believes it is a tissue of lies. However, murderers Barry Doyle and John Dundon are now serving life sentences and Limerick city is a much safer place in its wake but the grief of the killing will always remain. Assistant principal suspended in WV after transgender harassment claims

first_imgrecep-bg/iStock(CLARKSBURG, W.Va.) — A West Virginia high school suspended its assistant principal on Tuesday after a transgender student accused him of harassment.Liberty High School assistant principal Lee Livengood was suspended with pay following a complaint by sophomore Michael Critchfield, who said Livengood harassed him in a school bathroom last month, according to West Virginia’s American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing the child.Critchfield, who was assigned female at birth but identifies as male, told ACLU that Livengood approached him in the boys bathroom on Nov. 27, and said: “Why are you in this bathroom?” and “You freak me out.”“He kept asking me why I was in there. [He said], I shouldn’t be in there because I am not a guy, and I told him I am a boy, I identify with this bathroom, and it is my legal right to use this restroom,” Critchfield, 15, told local media outlet Metro News.“I was barricaded in the bathroom for three or four minutes,” Critchfield said. “And then a band mom was coming down complaining that they could hear Mr. Livengood yelling at me in the bathroom from the cafeteria, from the hallways, and some could hear it from the band room so she came down to see what was wrong.”Harrison County Schools superintendent Mark Manchin agreed to meet with ACLU officials after receiving a letter on behalf of the teen and said the district has reached out “for help with additional sensitivity training around transgender students,” ACLU said in a statement.Manchin told the ACLU that Livengood was placed on paid suspension until the end of semester while the school investigates the alleged incident, the constitutional advocacy group said. The school’s semester ends on Friday.“While we are heartened to hear the administration admit to wrongdoing, a four-day paid suspension of an employee is not sufficient,” ACLU said. “The Harrison County School District needs to make significant changes to its culture. We look forward to meeting with Mr. Manchin and developing a real plan to ensure that every student is safe.”Manchin acknowledged that the school “didn’t handle it well,” initially, but he said it does not “reflect on our employees at Harrison County Schools.”“I was able to confirm the interaction with Mr. Livengood and that indeed he acted inappropriately. We need to address it and we will address it,” Manchin told Metro News on Tuesday. “Mr. Livengood was contrite. He understood the severity, that it’s a hot button issue, how we need to handle this, he was aware, and unfortunately we didn’t handle it well. He was contrite in understanding that what he did was incorrect so we addressed it.”Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.last_img read more

IS IT TRUE NOVEMBER 15, 2017

first_imgEDITOR’S FOOTNOTE:  Any comments posted in this column do not represent the views or opinions of the City County Observer or our advertisers We hope that today’s “IS IT TRUE” will provoke honest and open dialogue concerning issues that we, as responsible citizens of this community, need to address in a rational and responsible way?IS IT TRUE we have been told because of recent increases in the County Income Option Tax (CIOT) and the Wheel Tax that Vanderburgh County may now have the money to fund the expansion of the county jail?IS IT TRUE that after over two centuries of statehood the State of Indiana is finally on the verge of allowing alcohol sales on Sunday?…a panel of experts established by the State of Indiana has concluded that firewater should be available on Sunday just like it is in nearly every other place on the planet?…Hoosiers have always been able to purchase booze on Sunday but only at certain times and only at bars or restaurants where beer and cocktails are marked up by a factor of more than 100% when compared to the cost at a grocery store or liquor store?…it is encouraging that Indiana may finally be coming out of the Stone Age with respect to alcohol sales as we all know that buying more on Saturday has always been the way to defeat the idiocy that the state hath wrought?IS IT TRUE it will be interesting to see if the powers that be will lift the ban on selling automobiles on Sundays too?…this is a ban that has mystified most people who are aware of this relic of the past when “blue laws” were passed to appease temperance league devotees and cars got caught up in the mix?…we cannot understand how a state with four border states that allow and even encourage vehicle sales on Sundays could every think that restricting auto sales on Sunday was good for business?…this is one of the things along with alcohol sales that the Chambers of Commerce in Indiana should be flogging the state government over as it hurts Indiana businesses and diminishes sales tax collections?…we are amazed that pizza sales are allowed on Sunday given the Dark Age thought process that our laws come from?IS IT TRUE a group of American veterans who deal with some of the most debilitating mental anguish has called upon the State of Indiana to legalize medicinal marijuana? …some Veterans  feel that legalizing medicinal marijuana and decriminalizing small amounts may just cut back on the overcrowding problem at the Vanderburgh County jail?…they also feel that the pro-keeping someone who possessed a small amount of marijuana in jail at $50,000 per year cost to the taxpayers is bordering on insane?IS IT TRUE the City of Evansville has voted to give a $500,000 tax abatement to a distribution center for golf equipment that will be hiring about 50 people at an average wage of roughly $15 per hour?  …we been told that distribution centers much like call centers sometimes have very little economic impact on any regional economy?  …we hope that the new golf equipment distribution center will?IS IT TRUE last night the Vanderburgh County Democratic party had a very successful Dinner/VIP reception fundraising event?  …over 100 people attended the VIP reception and 185 attended the dinner?  …we are told this was the most successful fundraising event that the local democratic party have had in many years?  …it looks like party chairman Scott Danks has the party headed in the right direction?IS IT TRUE that the IRS has now documented that there has been massive migration of high earning individuals from high tax states to low tax states?…the big winner has been Florida with the losers being made up of Illinois, New Jersey, and New York?…we doubt that the people running these states with notice until their checks start to bounce?Todays READERS POLL question is: Do you feel that the State of Indiana should allow alcohol sales on Sunday?  Please take time and read our other articles entitled “StatehouseFiles, LAW ENFORCEMENT, READERS POLL, BIRTHDAYS, HOT JOBS” and “LOCAL SPORTS” posted in our sections.  You now are able to subscribe to get the CCO daily.
